Quietness- It Is More Than The Sound of Silence

In my last post I mentioned that there was at least 5 topics that tied into Godly rest. Today we will look at quietness. We will see that it is more than the lack of physical noise that some people love and others hate.

We see that quietness like rest comes from obedience to God and the seeking of Him. Proverbs 1:33 says, " But he who listens to me shall live securely, and shall be at ease from the dread of evil." I know you're probably thinking that Scripture didn't say anything about quietness. You are right, directly it doesn't, but if we live a life of ease and free from evil there will be quietness. Lamentations 3:25,26 reads, "The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the person who seeks Him. 26 It is good that he waits silently for the salvation of the Lord." We all have heard " Good things come to those who wait." These Scriptures prove that statement to be true.

Quietness is not something that is just given to us, but is something that we must be an active participant in. Psalms 131:2 says, "Surely I have composed and quieted my soul; Like a weaned child rests against his mother, my soul is like a weaned child within me." It is something that we must work at. Isaiah 32:17 reads "And the work of righteousness will be peace, and the service of righteousness, quietness and confidence forever."

Next we will look at three Scriptures where quietness is recommended:

  1. Proverbs 17:1 "Better is a dry morsel and quietness with it than a house full of feasting with strife."

  2. Ecclesiastes 4:6 "One hand full of rest is better than two fists full of labor and striving after wind."

  3. Proverbs 14:30 "A tranquil heart is life to the body, but passion is rotten to the bones."

In those three Scriptures we see that quietness is something to desire for. 1 Thessalonians 4:11,12 puts it this way, "and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life and attend to your own business and work with your hands, just as we commanded you; 12 so that you may behave properly toward outsiders and not be in any need. " Again we see it recommended in 1 Timothy2:1-4 "First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, 2 for kings and all who are in authority, in order that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. 3 This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of truth."

So hopefully in this short post you can see that quietness is a vital part of rest and a crucial part of our daily lives. As always, thank you for reading and God bless!
